Picked A Waste Basket Full of Peppers For Winter Use

hot peppersLast year I grew bell peppers in a few colours and cayenne peppers which lasted us all winter but this year I decided to go with all hot peppers and planted 2 dozen plants.

I grew Cayenne, Jalapeno and Chile Grande peppers. I had such a great year for my peppers that I plan to grow even more hot peppers next year.

It’s October 18 today and I still have lots of hot peppers left in the garden. Most of them are Jalapeno and Cayenne peppers. I’d like to leave them there as long as I can now.

I did go out a couple of days ago and picked the pot of hot peppers that were mostly ripe as we had another threat of frost and I didn’t want to lose them. The did survive a couple of 4 Celsius nights which didn’t seem to bother them in the least. However we had a –2 night which killed the leaves.

IMG_5108This morning I took the first batch of Chile Grande peppers I planned to freeze and chopped them into small chunks and put them on cookie sheet and then into the freezer until they are frozen. I will then put them in freezer bags and will be able to take out just what I need and put the rest back.

I did not remove any of the membrane or seeds as they are the hottest part of the pepper.

I brought in all the Chile Grande peppers and pull the plants out of the garden to go into the compost bin so I will have more compost next year.

Bigger Cayenne Peppers

Last year my cayenne peppers were tiny compared to move of what I grew this year. You can see in the image below. The little on on the bottom of the rule was the size of last years and the other is what I managed to grow this year. So happy.

First Time Growing Jalapeno Peppers

IMG_5006I am going to freeze some of my Jalapeno peppers but I like the pickled Jalapenos we buy for our nacho nights so I will be canning some as well.

I think I have more than a hundred Jalapeno peppers still in the garden so I will be watching our weather closely so I can leave them out as long as possible.

I would like to fill then entire veggie garden with hot peppers and tomatoes next spring.
